Positions: Indigenous Representative and Technical Specialist
Breakwater Vantage is seeking an experienced Indigenous Representative and Technical Specialist with expertise in oil sands tailings ponds and Indigenous communities to join our growing team. As an Indigenous Representative and Technical Specialist, you will play a critical role in liaising between Indigenous communities and mining companies, advocating for environmentally responsible and culturally sensitive tailings pond management in Alberta's oil sands. You will use your technical expertise and understanding of Indigenous cultures to ensure that projects benefit the communities in which we operate.
Responsibilities:
Serve as the primary liaison and technical resource for tailings pond projects involving Indigenous communities and mining companies in the oil sands
Advocate for Indigenous communities, addressing concerns and incorporating traditional knowledge into tailings pond management and decision-making processes
Develop and maintain relationships with Indigenous stakeholders, including community leaders, elders, and representatives from Indigenous organizations
Collaborate with mining companies and project teams, ensuring that tailings pond projects are executed in a manner that respects Indigenous cultures and values
Participate in environmental assessments, regulatory permitting processes, and compliance monitoring activities related to tailings pond projects
Prepare technical reports, presentations, and other project documentation for internal and external stakeholders
Contribute to the development and implementation of company policies and practices that promote diversity, inclusion, and meaningful Indigenous engagement
Qualifications:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field
A minimum of 5 years of experience in tailings pond management in the oil sands, with a focus on Indigenous engagement and community relations
Demonstrated understanding of Indigenous cultures, histories, and contemporary issues affecting Indigenous communities in Canada
Familiarity with environmental regulations, guidelines, and best practices related to tailings pond management in the oil sands
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders
Ability to travel to remote locations and Indigenous communities (if needed not a requirement)
Self-motivated, with a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility
Assets:
Membership in a relevant professional organization (e.g., P.Eng., P.Geo., R.P.Bio.)
Proficiency in an Indigenous language
Experience working with GIS software and other environmental data analysis tools
