Position Description – Biogas Specialist

Seeking a qualified Biogas Specialist to engage with Breakwater Vantage.  The candidate will have knowledge in the production and utilization of biogas with a deep familiarity of aerobic and anaerobic digesters, organic feedstocks or biomasses that can be used to produce biogas, methods and technologies to produce and utilize the biogas as waste heat or meet gas pipeline specifications. Breakwater Vantage Inc. is currently seeking a water specialist to join our growing team of professionals. The position will be based out of our Calgary office. We are seeking a specialist who is highly motivated, independent, and committed to working with a diverse aste gas including methane and NMOC's, reduce emissions. (up to 98% efficiencies) and optimize the production of valuable renewable energy (Services: Biogas Conditioning, Evaporators, Blower Skid Packages).


The successful candidate will have an integral role in leading the planning, design, and construction of bigas infrastructure. The successful candidate will also provide guidance to a multi-disciplinary team of professionals on several diverse projects that could be occurring concurrently and will be responsible for producing technical work within their respective discipline.


Responsibilities:

  • Leadership style adapts as necessary to maintain team morale and collaboration to meet client and project objectives.

  • Will quickly develop an excellent understanding of project outcomes, resourcing needs, client needs, and financial and quality management requirements.

  • Build effective networks and working relationships with key stakeholders – both external and internal.

  • Provide engineering, technical, and advisory services to clients for specific projects in respect to water and wastewater engineering.

  • Develop and strengthen existing skills and deliver engineering projects in accordance with client requirements and in-line with company and industry best practice.

  • Undertake internal technical reviews and verification checks on analysis, reports, designs and associated advice.

  • Computer software to design equipment, systems, or structures.

  • Modify environmental factors that affect biogas production, such algae biofuel, alternative proteins, animal-free products, beverage fermentation, bio-based chemicals, biocatalysis, biodiesel conversion, biogas production, biomass power, carbon intensity, co2 utilization, combined heat & power, conversion technologies, enzyme technologies.

  • Document technical design details. Provide advice on issues related to industrial fermentation, landfill management, microbial fermentation, organic synthesis, plastic pyrolysis, plastic recycling, plastic waste.

  • Advise others regarding green practices or environmental concerns solid recovered fuels, solid state fermentation, sustainable foods, technical feasibility studies, torrefied biomass, waste to energy technology, and waste-to-hydrogen.

  • Develop operational methods or processes that use Renewable energy to also assist with things like renewable energy finance, renewable energy insurance, techno-economic analysis, due diligence, and feasibility studies.


Skills and Qualifications:

  • Creative problem-solver with demonstrated technical abilities.

  • Gas Processing experience and familiarity with designing and operating process equipment, consideration would be given to applicable petrochemical, NGL, cryogenic natural gas processing, or other hydrocarbon processing experiences.

  • Possess effective computer skills; Microsoft Office Suite and discipline specific software such as HYSYS, Aspen Plus, etc.

  • Project Management and/or Project Engineering experience a plus.

  • Supports the development and adjustments of facility production forecasting models.

  • Develops and maintains facility mass and energy balance including process and instrumentation design and development.

  • Publishes daily, weekly and monthly production reports.

  • Develops tools to support production, environmental, and compliance reporting.

  • Develops and maintains loss accounting summaries to allow for identification and categorization of facility production losses.

  • Develops tools and systems to monitor production performance summaries and Key Performance Indicators (KPI's).

  • Develops tools for monitoring and ordering catalysts, chemical and consumables needed to manage the facility.

  • Provides daily support to plant Operations personnel in troubleshooting process issues and concerns.

  • Supports process improvement studies, performance optimization, incident investigations, and economic evaluations.

  • Provides engineering support for plant shutdowns/turnarounds.

  • Authors and implements functional specifications, operating methods and procedures designed to minimize operating issues & maximize gas production.

  • Supports project and business development activities, proposal creation, market analyses, and strategic planning events as requested.

  • Contributes to the creation of technical manuals.

  • Provides operational training to all relevant personnel.

  • Performs other related duties as required and assigned.


Position Requirements:

  • Bachelors or Master’s Degree in Engineering from an accredited University specializing in environmental recovery solutions, is preferred.

  • Minimum 10 years applicable experience in industry or the consulting sector, with a minimum of 5 years solid technical experience in biogas.

  • Ensure safety and reliability.

  • Plan and work together with clients, contractors, consultants, and other engineers to ensure effective and desirable outcomes.

  • Communicate technical information to suppliers, contractors, or regulatory agencies.

  • Discuss designs or plans with clients. Design processing plants and related systems.

  • Design industrial processing systems.

  • Prepare detailed work plans. Supervise processing or manufacturing operations.

  • Proven project management experience in a multidisciplinary environment on biogas related projects.

  • Experience in successful technical delivery of projects.

  • Results orientated, with a reputation for, and demonstrated achievement of key strategic priorities.

  • Strong organizational ability to optimize and prioritize conflicting demands in a busy environment, to achieve deadlines and see responsibilities through to completion.

  • Experience in working in a technical leadership role within a multi-disciplinary team.
